launched by the ussr in 1957, sputnik 1 was the first satellite to orbit Earth, revolutionizing space technology. Sputnik pushed the boundaries of what was believed possible In aerospace technology. In reaction to russia's success, the united states founded the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)("Sputnik and The Dawn of the Space Age").

"...Sputnik woke the nation up, serving as a “focusing event” that put a spotlight on a national problem [in] education. Congress responded a year later with the National Defense Education Act, which increased funding for education at all levels, including low-interest student loans to college students, with the focus on scientific and technical education." ("How Sputnik changed U.S. education")In order to compete with russia's revolutionary space launch, the united states implemented new curriculum focused on math and science.

This space race led to the development of many important technologies, including satellites, docking mechanisms, and communication satellites (“What Was the Space Race? | National Air and Space Museum”).  This competition also prompted each superpower to develop early space laboratories, such as the American Skylab and the Soviet Mir space station, To study humans in microgravity (“Skylab Overview”).

Both nations aspired to have long term space missions; however, the political dispute,Negative public reactions, huge price tag, and the lack of a clear plan stalled any potential progress before collaboration began (“35 Years Ago: Launch of Mir Space Station’s First Module”) As the space race came to an end in mid-1975, President ford and The USSR's General secretary, leonid Brezhnev, discussed a revolutionary space research lab that would allow countries to work together and conduct research never before possible.
